Two volume set. The First American Edition of Captain John Smith's important work on the early English settlement on this continent. Complete with 2 folding maps, the nine-panel folding plate, 2 frontispiece (scarce thus). It goes without saying that Smith was a seminal figure in the colonization of North America, His account of his travel was integral in helping to encourage others to make the transatlantic trek. Despite some notable exaggerations in his writing, his reporting of the possibilities of successful colonization of the New World was surprisingly evenhanded in comparison with his contemporaries who quite normally asserted that gold was in abundance. He was realistic about the dangers but optimistic about the possibilities as well. In contemporary tree calf, with morocco labels. Sabin 82852 First Edition.
